Functional Neurology
You can start to heal when you understand what’s going on in your body and why you feel the way you do. Wholistic Healing Experiences puts this idea into practice using Functional Neurology, an area of study that links the body and brain even deeper and explains how the two communicate to help guide the pathway of restoration and recovery.
What is Functional Neurology?
The problem isn’t always where the pain is. Functional Neurology evaluates various processing centers in the brain to evaluate how the vision, vestibular, cognitive and autonomic areas are performing. A variety of therapies often using frequency, light, sound or movement is administered to specific areas of the body that trigger responses of the brain and nervous system. You can find the missing link to improve the function of everyday life while avoiding costly surgeries or medications.
Who needs Functional Neurology?
Suppose you’ve experienced anxiety, sports related concussions, neurological dysfunction, dizziness, chronic pain, migraines, vertigo, balance issues, tremors, movement disorders, joint pain, developmental disorders, memory problems, suicidal thoughts, coordination issues, cognitive decline, or a stroke. Or it’s more subtle like all of the sudden, you are experiencing migraines after being in a car accident a few months ago. You’ve been to see the experts in neurology, physical therapy, orthopedics and no one can offer a solution that improves the issue. In that case, Functional Neurology can help you restore balance to everyday life.
What does Functional Neurology Treatment look like?
The goal is to perform a series of tasks to evaluate performance. It often involves moving the eyes to follow a moving target, standing with eyes closed, or it could involve a series of tests such as blood pressure, pulse rate or oxygen saturation. Coordination tests like touching a body part immediately after the examiner touches it, or cognitive tests like remembering words on a list. Once the areas of dysfunction have been identified the rehab plan is tailored in a specific order to layer stimulation in a specific way so that the brain gets optimal improvement with the least amount of challenging symptoms like dizziness or anxiety.
Here are common techniques we use at Wholistic Healing Experiences:
Galvanic Electrical Stimulation
Applied to the auricular area of the ear often re-polarizes the nerves involved with tinnitus and head pain/migraines within minutes.
Red or Blue Lens Therapy
Wearing blue or red colored lenses to promote activity in frontal lobe areas. The response is typically reduced tension in muscles throughout the body, improved cognitive function and oftentimes a reduction of pain sensations in the body.
Gaze Stabilization
Guided and controlled eye and head movements can lead to improved balance and spatial awareness by stimulating parts of the brain like the vestibular system and cerebellum.
All Functional Neurology treatments will be customized to your specific symptoms and results from evaluation versus following a generic set of protocols like other rehab settings. These techniques are chosen to target specific parts of the brain and offer symptom relief and long-term change.
